Abstract

The relationship between oral diseases and systemic diseases has been established by current research. The mainstream media, including the front pages of Internet browsers, has brought this information to the attention of dental patients. Patients are now asking their dental care providers if they are aware of the patientÌs health situation and the relationship between dental and systemic problems. The dental office must understand these multiple relationships in order to maintain a relevant office.

The American Medical Association has treatment codes (CPT) for most ÏdentalÓ procedures. ICD-9 or diagnostic codes exist for hundreds of dental conditions. Dental codes have begun to follow the medical model. The change from ÏexamÓ to ÏevaluationÓ is a prime example. Health insurance companies recognize and often pay claims based on these medical diagnostic and treatment codes, including claims submitted by dentists using these codes to accurately describe the treatment provided. Utilizing the medical codes allows dentists to more precisely describe the problem and the treatment. Fees can then be more appropriate. Multiple codes for variations on the same procedure allow for a variable fee structure. The UCR, or more accurately, the fees paid in a zip code area, can be known. These are based upon an area described by the first three digits of the office zip code (eg.900XX). The fees paid are also broken into percentile rankings.

This one hour presentation explains how the dental-medical cross-coding is accomplished. The methods employed by the insurance industry to obtain the fees used for reimbursement in a given area are explained. The coding and payment of laser-related treatments are reviewed in a separate segment of this presentation.

This course, which will benefit all members of the dental team, will explain in detail why people have no trouble in their physician's office but are petrified when they visit the dentist - if they ever actually see the dentist!

Why is the great motivator for many people the very thing wish to avoid at the dentist in the first place?

Why are women patients more fearful at the dentist, but more cooperative than men?

Is there anything we as practitioners can do to allay our patients' fears without sedating medications?

These and many other questions will be addressed and answered in this fast paced one hour lecture which is backed up with an informative Powerpoint presentation.

Learning Objectives:
  • Why patients behave the way they do in the dental environment. Using this knowledge change your approach to interacting with your patients in a way that will make them less fearful and more comfortable in the dental chair.

Abstract
Splint Therapy and LANAP

Splint therapy is rarely explored deeply in dental school, and there are many different techniques available to the general practitioner and specialist. These factors, coupled with the complexity of the masticatory system and its relationship to the central nervous system, make splint therapy a confusing, and often frustrating process.

In this lecture, I intend to offer a simplified perspective from which splint therapy can be a more predictable and therapeutic, and possibly even enjoyable, part of your practice. I will review splint designs and provide a historical overview, which will serve as a review for those already experienced in the fabrication and delivery of occlusal splints.

I will discuss the anatomy of the masticatory system, the mechanics of the temporomandibular joint and masticatory musculature as they relate to the occlusion, the role of parafunction in occlusal disease and periodontal breakdown, and the rationale for prescribing splint therapy.

I will discuss the concept of fremitus, describe the signs to look for prior to engaging in any type of therapy, as well as techniques to bring you patients into a more connected relationship with their occlusal conditions.

The "LANAP" Splint will be introduced (hopefully!!). We will discuss materials, fabrication, lab prescriptions, delivery, and follow-up. The participants will be able to examine a sample of the "LANAP Splint".

After this course, participants will feel confident prescribing and providing basic splint therapy, particularly following LANAP.

In 2001, he moved to Arizona to practice and in 2003, opened his periodontics and implant practice in Chandler. He began utilizing CT guided implant treatment planning and placement in early 2004, and is one of the most prolific users of the technology in Arizona. In 2005, he became the first periodontist in Phoenix to incorporate LANAP into his practice, and in 2007, added a cone beam CT scanner to aid in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning of his periodontal and implant patients.

Abstract
Computer Guided Implant Treatment:
Achieving Predictable and Precise Results

We are fast approaching the day when CT case planning will become a "standard procedure" within the treatment process in ensuring optimized results for implant patients. Through 3D visualization of the patient's anatomy, computer-guided treatment planning software can be used to help prevent mistakes and unpleasant surprises during implant surgery. By utilizing data processed from a CT scan, we are able to measure and locate vital structures such as the mandibular nerve, sinus cavities and nasal floor. Certain software programs also contain 3D images of implants, abutments and teeth, which allows for efficient, accurate and reliable planning of number of implants needed, implant position and size, and abutment selection. When the case is planned, a computer generated surgical guide is ordered to ensure the planned result is replicated in the real surgical situation. This program will present the practice and patient benefits of CT technology for increased accuracy and control of implant placement.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to understand:
  • The latest software tools: realistic implants, measurements, localization of vital structures, collision detection, bone quality and many others.
  • Surgical guide types and how to design the right guide for their patient.
  • How computer-guided treatment planning software can grow your implant business.
